What is Functional Medicine?

Great question!

Functional Medicine is a way of assessing and addressing health that takes into account the whole person, and strives to get to the root cause of any health issue.

Functional Medicine figures out HOW and WHY a disease develops and attempts to restore health by addressing the root cause in an individualized way, so you get the best possible outcome.

It also focuses on prevention of disease and maintaining quality of life, not just diagnosis and treatment.

Dr. Kate's "flavor" of Functional Medicine uses evidence-based lifestyle interventions, behavioral health, nutrition, targeted supplements, and nutraceuticals to help folks get as healthy as possible (and stay that way)!

These days she focuses on helping busy folks whose health concerns are related to stress - either caused by it or made worse by it. But that's not all!

Here are a few examples of common issues Dr. Kate can help with:

Hormone imbalance, chronic inflammatory disease, digestive issues, anxiety,  infertility, adrenal fatigue/HPA axis dysfunction, hypothyroid, insomnia, autoimmunity, neurologic issues, immune dysfunction, chronic fatigue, and weight gain.

What are Dr. Kate's qualifications?

Dr. Kate has been practicing Integrative and Functional Medicine for over a decade. After completing her undergraduate degree in human biology and psychology, she enrolled at National University of Health Sciences in Lombard, Illinois to pursue a doctorate in Chiropractic Medicine with emphasis on Functional Medicine, natural primary care, nutrition, and Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

Dr. Kate graduated Valedictorian of her class in December of 2011, and joined a prominent Functional Medicine practice in her hometown of Grand Rapids, MI, where she worked for 8 years. She has additional training and certifications through the Institute of Functional Medicine and similar associations in areas such as: preventing & reversing cognitive decline, female reproductive health, endocrine health, chronic disease and immune health, weight management, and exercise science. A lifelong learner, Dr. Kate continues to seek further education every year.

Is Dr. Kate a Medical Doctor?

Dr. Kate is a Functional Medicine Practitioner (AFMCP) and Doctor of Chiropractic (DC). She received her doctorate from National University of Health Sciences in Lombard, IL. Her post-doctorate education and training is in Functional Medicine and Nutrition. She has received complete training in the biological sciences such as anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, epidemiology, histology, blood chemistry, neurology and pharmacology, as well as conventional medical diagnosis and treatment. In addition, she has received extensive training in clinical nutrition, botanical medicine and lifestyle counseling. Dr. Kate does not diagnose or treat diseases or medical conditions. She focuses her consulting practice on promoting health and optimal function. Her services are not meant to substitute or replace those of a medical doctor but they are meant to work in conjunction with them.

Can Dr. Kate help me with lab testing?

Often, we find that lab testing is not adequately explained to clients by their testing physicians. Dr. Kate is happy to talk through most testing you've already acquired on your own or through your physician.

Dr. Kate offers cutting-edge lab testing based on your unique case. Lab costs will vary based on what is determined that you need during your initial consultation. We will work within your budget to help you prioritize testing.

Dr. Kate has access to testing through some amazing companies (DUTCH/Precision Analytical, Great Plains Laboratory, Quest Labs, Genova Diagnostics, and others) to provide Organic Amino Acid testing, Comprehensive Stool Evaluation, and measurements of cortisol and hormones.  (These are just a few examples.)

Dr. Kate cannot provide diagnosis codes or procedure codes for lab coverage through insurance.

Does Dr. Kate accept insurance?

No.

By not participating with or accepting insurance, Dr. Kate ensures that you have the greatest freedom to choose your best path to wellness without the restraint of red tape.  That way there are no surprises about what may or may not be covered.  All prices are transparent.

Some clients are able to utilize their HSA funds to work with Dr. Kate, depending on their specific policy. However, Dr. Kate is legally unable to provide a diagnosis, procedure codes, or a letter of medical necessity for submission, because her Functional Medicine consultations do not establish a doctor-patient relationship.

Note: many clients can also use their HSA account to purchase supplements as needed through her discount Fullscript dispensary.

How much does it cost to work with Dr. Kate?

The investment for the Newbie 1:1 Consultation is $547.

Specialty Functional testing is not included. If needed, the investment for these labs is typically in the $300-450 range (with wholesale pricing).

Dr. Kate will help you clarify exactly which vitamins or supplements you need (or don’t need). While we can gain a lot of ground with personalized recommendations around nutrition and lifestyle changes, many people need a temporary (or long term) "leg up" in the form of supplementation based on their body's unique limitations, inefficiencies, or deficiencies.

To keep things manageable, you'll have access to prescription quality supplements through my FullScript dispensary, where you will receive 20% off all products.

Dr. Kate is a supplement minimalist, so if you have financial constraints, she will work closely with you to prioritize the most important supplements to add and remove.

Once you've completed your initial session with Dr. Kate, she will help you determine what level of ongoing support you need to keep working toward your goals and maintain your gains.

Does Dr. Kate provide in-person services?

Nope!

To accommodate busy schedules, and provide health education, resources, and support to folks around the world, Dr. Kate offers virtual 1:1 services.

All consultations and case reviews are provided via a secure, HIPPA-compliant telehealth portal, so no need to worry about privacy.

Can Dr. Kate be my primary doctor?

No.

While Dr. Kate IS a doctor, she can't be YOUR doctor.

Your healthcare is a team effort, and Functional Medicine plays a different position on this “team.” Dr. Kate's role is to educate you on your body’s signals and support you in your efforts to reach your goals as an ongoing consultant, not serve as your personal physician.

It's important that you have a primary care provider to handle ordering of important screening tests (like mammograms, colonoscopies, etc) and urgent/same-day/emergency issues that may require immediate care, prescription medication or hospitalization.

Think of Dr. Kate as your expert coach, cheerleader, favorite teacher, and trail guide for all things health & wellness.
